Pre-school (or Sadochok) programs
set the tone for language learning within a comfortable Ukrainian
cultural and social environment. Most pre-school programs are fun and
educational, offering a blend of language, games, songs, music,
stories, crafts, snack time and play time. Pre-school sessions are
usually two hours in length, offered on either two or three days of
the week. Parent volunteers and community sponsors oversee
administrative details such as program location, finances and field
trips, while the teacher organizes the curriculum and other related
program details.
Ukrainian Kindergarten programs
take place during regular school hours, with children meeting every
second day throughout the school year. Programs are led by qualified
teachers who teach the Ukrainian language through the Kindergarten
curriculum. In the bilingual education classroom, Ukrainian language
use is promoted during the full day. In core Ukrainian Kindergarten
classes, a small portion of the day is devoted to language
instruction.
