Breakfast: A Brain Booster for Children
Breakfast is a very important meal since
it is the first time many of us have eaten in
10-12 hours. Studies have found that
memory and school performance suffer when children skip breakfast. Half of students arriving at school in the
morning have eaten from only 1 or 2 food groups instead of the 3 groups
nutritionists recommend.
Hungry children are: 12 times more likely to be dizzy.
4
times more likely to be tired.
3 times more likely to have
problems concentrating.
2 times more likely to have
frequent headaches.
2 times more likely to have
frequent colds.
The brain cannot store energy; therefore,
it must be replenished. Whole grain
breakfast cereals or toast are good sources of energy for the brain. Serve with protein foods such as eggs, milk,
yogurt, cheese, or peanut butter to help that energy last longer. Complete the meal with a fruit or vegetable
choice. If serving juice, choose one
that is unsweetened and is 100% juice, not a “drink”, “ade”, “beverage”, or
"punch”, as these often contain as much sugar as soft drinks and have
little or no real juice in them.
Helping children eat well is one of the
most important things that adults can do to assist children in meeting their
full mental and physical potential. Therefore Lord Asquith School, with the
help of our volunteers from the community and a $1483.00 grant from Breakfast for Learning, is excited to
be sponsoring a breakfast program, “Nutrition
for Success” twice a week beginning in February of 2009.
Nutrition
for Success Program: On Monday
and Thursday mornings from 8:35-8:55, breakfast snacks such as muffins, cheese,
or yogurt will be available for all
students, staff and volunteers. The
items will be on tables in the front foyer of the school. Volunteers will be
there to assist children and hand out the items. Students will eat in their classrooms and
still be ready to start the day at 9:00. We are extremely grateful for our
coordinators, Brenda Friesen and Dawn Raiche. We would also like to thank Ms.
Woodside for helping to coordinate the baking.
***It
is extremely important that you contact your child’s teacher before February 1st
if you do not want your child to participate in the snack program. If they
aren’t participating, you may still want to send something in their lunch kit
so that they too can nourish their body before school begins. We realize many
of our students have long bus rides, choose not to eat right away when they get
up, and so forth. All that your child needs to participate is a consent form that is
signed by a parent/guardian. These forms will be sent home within the next
couple of weeks.

Family Literacy Day is January 27th

ABC CANADA and Honda Canada to celebrate parents and children reading together
to become lifelong learners.
Q: Is there a length of time
the adults and children must read for?
A: Yes, adults must read to
children for no less than 30 minutes.
Please visit www.FamilyLiteracyDay.ca or email fld@abc-canada.org for more information and contest entry
forms.
Cultural Diversity and Aboriginal
Awareness Month
January 5-February 13th
Students and staff at Lord
Asquith School are engaging in a School Side Aboriginal Awareness Unit. In
celebration of multiculturalism, we are having 4 colour days to represent the 4
races, which also coincide with the Aboriginal Medicine Wheel. Each grade will
be participating in some or all of these events: birch bark biting; making
dream catchers; round dancing; a presentation on the Inuit way of life; and
other various activities.
ALLERGY AWARE
Children with severe
allergies are taught from an early age the “everywhere, every time”
rule. They are taught to always read ingredient labels and to always question adults regarding ingredients
in foods that they might be giving them. This is a survival skill.
To reinforce this teaching
and in support of Lord Asquith being peanut and tree nut aware, we ask that
when parents/caregivers send baked goods/treats (for the class) for special
occasions or classroom celebrations that a label be included indicating that
the food doesn’t contain any peanuts or tree nuts.
If you are planning to send
baked goods/treats, please notify
the classroom teacher ahead of time.
Thank you for your support and cooperation.

Helpful Hints for Reading
READING AT HOME
The following are some ways that parents can facilitate and support their
child’s growth as a reader.
1.
Read with your child.
·
Encourage beginning readers to read repetitive
parts in a story with you as you read.
·
Read a favorite
story a number of times to your child until the content and language are
familiar and comfortable. This will
assist the young learner to read the story independently.
·
Take turns reading
alternate pages with your child.
·
Choose speaking
parts of various characters or the narrator in a story for your child to read.
·
If your child is
stuck on a word, don’t hesitate to supply it for him/her in order to keep the meaningful
flow of the story going.
·
Try echo reading
where you read slightly faster than your child as he/she “echoes” you. Gradually, your child will be able to read
along with you.
