As Travel Agents you will discover amazing facts about a variety of destinations.  Within your designated roles, you will present your findings on your travel destination in the form of a travel brochure.  As a class, we will then compare and contrast each travel destination in an attempt to rate and recommend destinations to other travelers.

Task

By following the six research steps and working in a group of five, you must gather enough information to recommend a travel destination to your peers.  Within your designated roles, you must find and present information on your travel destination in a 6 page travel brochure…pictures and text!

The Process

First, your class will divide into 5-person groups.

Step 1 – Planning

1.  You will study one world culture and create a travel brochure with your group.

Choose one country from the following list:      

Barbados Kenya
Ecuador Mexico
Egypt Monaco
Indonesia  South Africa
Israel Spain

2. You will then decide which of the five roles you will take for your group.
   
(One role per individual in the group)

Bobby Bookworm

Bobby Bookworm likes to know 

all the facts and figures about the places where she travels.  She enjoys reading encyclopedias. Bobby Bookworm will find out: Area and population of the country of destination; major cities; major geographical features; gross national product and important exports.

Casey Culture 

Casey Culture wants to learn all he can about people and places at his destination.  Casey Culture will find out: What are three cultural sites of interest at his destination; what is interesting about them.

Francis Fun 

Francis Fun is the adventurer of the group.  The wilder and more exotic the adventure, the more she wants to experience it! Francis Fun will find out: what are three activities, sports or natural areas that would fun to see or do at the destination; how easy is it to get to natural areas; shopping -- are there products that are unique to this destination that the group could buy

Lindsay Logistics

Lindsay Logistics is very organized.  (S)he has a budget for the group and plans to stick to it.  Lindsay Logistics will find out: How much is round trip airfare to the destination; what the weather is like there; what will group members need to pack; what is an approximate per diem (one-day) amount that group members would need to stay at a hotel and eat at the destination; what is the currency of the destination and the rate of exchange?

Taylor Timid

Taylor Timid is not an adventurous spirit.  He wants to make sure his group stays healthy and safe, so he checks out health and safety advisories for his group.  Taylor Timid will find out: if you need shots before traveling to the destination; if country is safe with regard to its political situation/crime rate; if within-country travel is safe/easy. 

Click on the title role and begin your quest! Specific tasks are assigned to each role along with resources to assist you with your travel plans.

3.  As a group you will fill in the What is my Assignment chart and submit it to your teacher.

Step 2 – Locating

1.  You will study  Internet sites for the focus country and answer the questions on the "Fact Sheet" for your role. Fact sheets should be turned in to the teacher for review.

2.  One member of your group needs to interview a travel agent to request information on the destination

3. You need to locate two print resources from the library.  Be sure to include them in your bibliography.

Step 3 – Selecting

1.  You must skim and scan your resources for information.

2.  You must be able to interpret charts and graphs to obtain information.

Step 4 – Processing

1.  You must then meet as a group and synthesize your information - in other words decide what is going on your brochure!

2.  Collect various pictures and photos from internet sites and travel brochures.

3.  Hand in the above information to be approved by the teacher OR arrange a mini-conference with the teacher.

Step 5 – Communicating

You are now ready to create your travel brochure! 

1.  Preview various travel brochures and observe where and what information is included.

2.  Create a template of your brochure indicating where your text and pictures will go.

3.  Finalize your brochure and create it!

4.  Create a bibliography listing sources of information used that were listed by your teacher.

Step 5 – Evaluating

1.  Hand in the brochure along with the teacher created rubric

2.  Complete a self & peer evaluation checklist (link to Evergreen Curriculum)

After viewing the country presentations, the class will discuss and make recommendations about the attractiveness of foreign travel to the countries that were studied.

Conclusion

Congratulations!  You've completed the quest, and now you're the experts!   Great job!!!

These are real-world issues about which people make decisions every day. Hopefully, you have learned how to look at the pros and cons of travel to any foreign destination before spending any of your hard-earned money!
